Types of transmission line conductors
1. All Aluminum Conductor(AAC)
All aluminum conductors are made from electrical grade aluminum. These conductors are having good conductivity and having poor strength. These conductor are not used for transmission purpose due to the poor mechanical strength. These conductor are used in distribution purpose where span length are small. These conductor having more sag per span means if the span increase then the sag also increase.
These conductor only having aluminum so corrosion of these conductor are very less and mostly used in coastal areas. These conductors are used where more current transfer required.

2. Aluminum Conductor, Aluminum Reinforced (ACAR)
The ACAR conductors are made by wrapping the concentrically stranded electrical grade aluminum wires on high strength aluminum silicon magnesium alloy core. These conductors are having better electrical and mechanical properties.
The ACAR conductor having better current carrying capacity, good mechanical strength and lighter weight. These conductors are used in overhead transmission line as well distribution lines. The corrosion resistance of the ACAR conductor are very poor and these conductors are most expensive conductors.

3. All Aluminum Alloy Conductor(AAAC)
All aluminum alloy conductors are made from electrical grade aluminums mixed with the silicon and magnesium. These conductors mechanical tension strength is very higher and also having good conductivity. These conductor are also having good corrosion resistance so its used in coastal areas. These conductors are lighter in weight than ACSR, but cost of the AAAC conductor is higher than the ACSR. These conductor are used for transmission of high voltage electrical power from long distances.
AAAC conductor having better sag tension characteristic and high strength to weight ratio. Electrical losses are lesser in AAAC and having moderate conductivity.

4. Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR)
The ACSR conductor are made by wrapping number of aluminum conductor on the central steel core. The central steel core having number of small size steel wire. These steel wire coated with Zinc.
The Aluminum conductor transfer the electrical power and steel wires provides the good mechanical tensile strength. Steel core are galvanized for corrosion protection. The Grease also used between the Aluminum conductor and steel core to provide additional protection against corrosion. Due to High mechanical tensile strength, these conductor are used for transmission of electrical power at longer distances with larger span with minimum sags.

The aluminum strands reduce the skin effects. The ACSR conductor having good ampere capacity, good thermal properties, high tensile strength and high strength to weight ratio.

5. International Annealed Copper Stand (IACS)
These conductor is used for reference for making above conductors. The IACS conductor are having 100 % conductivity and made from the annealed copper.

6. High Temperature Low Sag Conductor (HTLS)
The HTLS conductors are new invented conductors. These conductors can withstand the operating temperature up to 210 C. So HTLS conductors carry higher current as compared to conventional conductors. These conductors also having lower sag in case of the higher temperature.
The higher temperature and high tensile strength are provided by the annealed aluminum conductor and composite core construction. The high tensile strength core which carries both weight of the conductor and tension in the conductor span. In these conductors Low sag are provided by high tensile strength inner core.

7. Bundled Conductors
The bundled conductors are made bundling the two or more conductors with help of spacers. The bundled conductors together carry more current. The bundled conductors are made from any of the above conductors. The bundle conductor are made from ACSR conductors in modern scenario.
The bundled conductors are used to reduce line inductance and increase the line capacitance. The bundled conductors reduced the corona formation, so power loss is reduced and transmission line efficiency improved. The bundled conductors reduced interference with the nearby communication lines.
