What is the difference between MCB and MCCB?

  • The full form of MCB is a Miniature circuit breaker and the full form of MCCB is Molded case circuit breaker.
  • The current interrupting rating of MCB is up to 1800 amps and the current interrupting rating of MCCB is 10k – 200k amps.
  • The MCB is a type of switch which protects the system equipment from the overloaded current. The MCCB protects the system equipment from over-temperature and short-circuits current.
  • The rating of MCB is 100A and the rating of MCCB is 10-200A.
  • The tripping circuit of the MCB is fixed and the tripping Circuit of the MCCB is movable.
  • The MCB is used for low currents and MCCB is used for high currents.
  • The MCB is used for domestic purposes and the MCCB is used for industrial purposes.
  • The MCB and MCCB both are thermomagnetic devices and are classified under low-voltage breakers
  • The trip characteristics of MCB cannot be adjusted and the trip characteristics of MCCB can be adjusted.
  • In MCB, the remote on/off is not possible, while in MCCB, it is possible by the use of a shunt wire.
  • For an MCB, the short circuit time is about 3 ms and the short circuit time for an MCCB is about 9 ms.
  • An MCB usually has single-pole, double-pole or triple-poles and An MCCB can have up to 4 poles.
