What is the use of earthing transformer?

     The primary function of an earthing transformer is to provide a low-impedance path to ground for the neutral point of a power system. It is typically used in high-voltage power systems to limit the voltage rise due to earth faults and to provide a means of detecting and clearing earth faults.


      When a ground fault occurs in a power system, the voltage at the fault point rises to a high level due to the low impedance path to ground. This high voltage can damage the insulation of the equipment and cause electrical shock hazards to personnel. Therefore, it is necessary to limit the voltage rise by providing a low-impedance path to ground.

      The earthing transformer is designed to provide a low-impedance path to ground by connecting its neutral point to earth. The transformer's primary winding is connected to the high-voltage power system, and the secondary winding is connected to earth. The secondary winding is typically rated for a much lower voltage than the primary winding.

     When a ground fault occurs, the earthing transformer provides a path to ground for the fault current. The fault current flows through the secondary winding, which is connected to earth, and the voltage at the fault point is limited to a safe level. This protects the equipment and personnel from the high voltage due to the fault.

      In addition to limiting the voltage rise, the earthing transformer also provides a means of detecting and clearing earth faults. The earthing transformer is typically connected to the earth fault protection system of the power system, which detects earth faults and triggers the protection devices to clear the fault.
